Ken Ficara: Diatonic, chromatic and bass harmonicas, delays and loops

Produced by Ken Ficara

Recorded on Park Place

This morning as I was recording this Em improvisation, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in Tucson. The feel of the music mirrored the ugly feeling in the pit of my stomach; the terror of being intimidated by violent political bullies. The latest word is that five were killed in the shooting; Giffords is in critical condition. And I am frightened.

Musically, this is an improvisation in Em, beginning with a single drone note, the low E on a bass harmonica. The riff was played on a chromatic, through a delay and an octave doubler, and then doubled on a C diatonic in fifth position. The solos are played on the chromatic.

As usual, this was recorded live, but the original was very long. I cut out a lot of repetition and false starts, so you will hear some edits along the way, as well as some clipping.
